Katie McGlynn has quit Coronation Street after more than six-years, little more than a day after co-star Faye Brookes confirmed her own exit from the ITV soap.

The actress, who plays Sinead O’Connor, is the sixth high-profile star to leave Coronation Street since the turn of the year, with the growing exodus of names also including Kym Marsh, Tristan Gemmill, Bhavna Limbachi and Connie Hyde.

A source told MailOnline: ‘Katie is fully committed to playing out the extremely important storyline she is currently portraying on screen.

‘This story still has a long way to go. Any speculation threatens to undermine the storyline for viewers.’

Coronation Street fans have firmly placed the blame on producer Iain MacLeod, who they have branded ‘awful’ and ‘disastrous’ in a slew of tweets.

It comes despite sources telling MailOnline that the soap boss is in no way responsible for the exits of five different cast members in the last three months, including actresses Kym Marsh and Faye Brookes.

Iain took over as Coronation Street’s producer in June following the departure of Kate Oates, and his storylines first appeared on screen in December.

His plots have been far lighter than the darker scenes fans saw under Kate’s leadership, which included Aidan Connor’s suicide and the murderous rampage of Pat Phelan.

But the change in tone hasn’t prevented a host of stars walking away from long-term roles on the show.

However a Corrie source has told MailOnline that Iain is not to blame for so many actors deciding to leave the soap, and the soap’s cast is ever-changing with characters constantly coming and going.

They said: ‘Corrie’s cast is the biggest it has ever been, and actors always come and go in a soap. Producers have recently cast Gemma’s brother and four members of the Bailey family.

‘Corrie is a great show to work on and everyone is very excited about Iain’s plans for the summer, there are some massive story lines coming up.

‘Sometimes actors want to try other things, sometimes story lines dictate that people will leave. There is no issue at all with Iain.’
